The Importance of Reading
“Books transform children’s lives – they can open windows into new worlds, widen their horizons or even just make them laugh themselves silly! Reading for pleasure can give children the key they need to unlock their dreams.” Christopher Edge
Here at Monkey Puzzle New Cross we are passionate about books! We understand the importance of reading and sharing books and stories with the children – even when they are very small! We just love books really – and we aren’t the only ones!!! The children love them too!
Our Babies enjoy relaxing with a book, investigating the textures and colours, listening to them being read and enjoying the challenge of turning the pages!
Toddlers love to look at the brightly coloured pictures, find objects on the pages and listening to the rhyming words. They learn repeated phrases and refrains and begin to join in with their favourite stories! They really enjoy the independence of choosing a story and sitting down to “read” it themselves!
In Preschool we enjoy having the children tell us their own version of the stories using the pictures to guide them! They get the chance to look at words, begin to recognise and find letters as well interpreting and retelling the stories for themselves.
If you would like to learn more about the importance of books in children’s lives and how you can support a passion for books in your child, then we would like to welcome you along to our first Stay and Play on 2nd May from 4.00pm – 6.00pm. We will be exploring several stories in different ways with the children to help you understand the different roles books play in our everyday learning environment. There will be a book stall available for you to have a look at some of the books we use and lots of information for you to take away around how to support your child using books and developing their love of reading.
There will lots of book passionate staff on hand to share their experiences with you and help give you any support you need. Anna will be leading a story time for the children to take part in and there will be an opportunity for you to meet the manager and have a tour of the nursery if you have never been before!
If you would like to join us please drop us a call on 0203 583 0076 or e-mail Liesl on mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org– we can’t wait to see you!
“Reading for pleasure is the single biggest factor in success later in life, outside of an education. Study after study has shown that those children who read for pleasure are the ones who are most likely to fulfil their ambitions. If your child reads, they will succeed – it’s that simple.” Bali Rai
